At present in the world-wide
practice the basic technology of storage of fruits is the regulated
atmosphere with ultra oxygen content. In China the most widely-applying
technology of storage is artificial cooling, in advanced farms the
regulated atmosphere and the regulated atmosphere with ultra oxygen
content is mastered.
The main cause of disease and
the decline in the quality of fruit and vegetables is the excessive
accumulation of ethylene inside the fruit and in the environment.
Ethylene is synthesized by fruits or comes from the
environment. Even in extremely low concentrations this gas
activates maturation, and aging of fruits and vegetables,
which leads to loss of quality and development of many physiological and
mushroom diseases.
The most effective inhibition of ethylene is provided in a dynamic controlled atmosphere. However, this technology imposes a number of special requirements for the tightness of the chambers, the equipment providing the creation and maintenance of the set parameters of the atmosphere, the qualification of technical personnel, quality and physiological homogeneity of the fruit, which Increases the cost of using it.
The mechanism of operation of the ethylene inhibitor is that the molecules of the active substance 1-MCP after the treatment of the fruit are firmly attached to the ethylene receptors on the cell membrane, and occupy its place. Therefore, ethylene can no longer join receptors and form active complexes that accelerating the ripening and aging of the fruit.
During
the storage, many scientific research results have shown that with the
treatment of 1-MCP fruits have obvious long-time shelf life and less
diseases after unloaded from cold room.
