Plum harvest and storage with 1-MCP
As our research has shown, the fruit of plums, even in a state of full maturity, is susceptible to ethylene influence. For most varieties, the date of harvest is determined by the change in the color of the skin that is described for each grade. A color palette for each type has been developed to determine the maturity of each grade. Usually we use three states of maturity description:
- Minimum mature;
- Good mature;
- Completely mature.
The measurement of the hardness of the fruit is recommended for grades where the skin color is masked completely by full redness or darkening even before full maturation. The maximum maturity of the plum, determined by the penetrometer with the diameter of 8 mm tip, shows, in particular, the stage of maturation, in which the fruit can still be collected without further damage during harvest processing and transportation. The hardness index of 2-3 kg per square centimeter is taken beyond the limit at which the plums are still considered "ready-to-eat". In this case, the plum is less susceptible to damage from shocks compared to peaches and apricots. At the same time, the period of removal of plum fruit has a decisive role in the extension of the shelf life. This fact is well-known to gardeners, and it is widely benefited even by such small farms.
Optimum temperature at storage of plums consider from -1.0 to 0°C, optimum relative humidity 90-95%, the speed of air circulation in a refrigerating chamber on 150 tons of plum should make from 30 to 50 m3/hour. Expected storage time of plums under optimal conditions is from 15 to 90 days depending on the variety. But after treatment of plums by Aoweite 1-MCP time of storage considerably increases, that has proved the same gardener of drums, blink to keep plum of a sort in the chambers till March of month inclusively.
