To provide the population of industrial centers of the country with fresh fruits and vegetables there is a need to transport them over long distances (up to 4 thousand km).

However, the existing technology does not sufficiently ensure the preservation of the quality of products for a long time.

The most significant shortcomings of the current technologies are:

 - the lack of capacity to create and maintain the necessary composition of the gas environment, which is, along with the temperature and humidity, the most important parameter, determining the optimal mode of transportation;

 - Some tropical fruits and fruits, stone fruits, summer varieties of apples and pears, berries, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. In normal refrigeration mode have a limited period of storage and transportation (from a few days to several weeks). The deadline for the delivery of such goods is often comparable with the time of loading, transportation and disposal;

 - low temperatures in some fruits lead to the violation of biological processes, the development of physiological diseases and damage.

The above-mentioned reasons targeting on search of new progressive ways of preservation of quality of fruits and vegetables at use of railway transport, development of technical equipment and technology of such transportations. Excessive accumulation of ethylene is the main cause of the decline in quality and development of many diseases of fruits and vegetables during storage and transportation.

The essence of the new technology is the processing of fruits and vegetables with the gaseous inhibitor of ethylene (1-MCP) in extremely low concentrations (0.5-1.0 ppm). After treatment many kinds of fruits and vegetables can be stored and transported for a long time without significant losses of their quality. In the applied concentrations the drug is safe for human health and the environment.
